These are some of the first pictures i’ve taken on film with my Diana F+ camera.

I hope that through my photos, people will be able to see the beauty that Singapore possesses: the balance between old and new, the polar ends of both Western and Asian, the vitality and vibrancy found in our day-to-day Singaporean life. A beauty that is not contrived, and to prove to naysayers that (at least) a certain level of culture can be found in this little red dot.

Pink Tentacle has a nice collection of assorted posters by Yusaku Kamekura, often considered the father of Japanese graphic design. Many would probably know him best from his gorgeous work for the 1964 Tokyo Olympic Games.

Home Comfort

i just came back from a reunion dinner with my mom’s side, and it was filled with such comfort, like free-falling into your own bed at the end of every day.

the conversations were a mangling of English and Malay, or English interspersed with malay lingo or even idiosyncrasies. words like “kurang ajar” (not sure if i spelt it correctly) will never be used by any of my friends, hence our speech served to remind us how different we were from others, and yet the same as everyone else at home; it reinforced my identity as a half-peranakan time and time again. (maybe this is the main reason why i dislike being cheena, because it tends to sweep my peranakan heritage under the carpet, which is much, much closer to home.)

and i have not even gotten down to the food - nyonya curry, beef rendang, ayam assam, ponteh, etc. it was such comfort food: home cooked goodness, and the spicy, sweet and sour were such a delight to my senses.

i cannot wait for (a not so) chinese new year to arrive, where my feasting on peranakan food ensues.

Skinny Love by Bon Iver.

This is one of the saddest songs i’ve heard in my life.

Sometimes i like listening to sad songs that well up your heart. I think it’s because many atimes when we’re happy and swinging, we tend to forget what we’re fighting for. We’re meant to live for so much, much more.

There is a warm-ness to this home, where it seems that the individual rooms are snugly fitted beside each other like new-born triplets, yet keeping their distinct qualities. Simply awesome.

Born in Germany, and then raised when I moved back and completed high school there. I’ve moved everywhere, but Germany has always been the place I consider home. My wrist reads ‘love’ in German, ‘liebe.’ Every time I look at this I remember the greatest moments of traveling, laughing, and being with the best people I’ve ever met.
